Ezra 9 and 10
Ezra 10:1. The people of Israel weep because of trespasses not necessarily done by themselves. They know, however, that they are judged as a people so if some of the people have trespassed, then everyone feels the sorrow. They are saved as a people. They want to live worthy of the blessings promised to them and they know they are tied together in that thing. It made me think of members who don't go to church. Perhaps I take too much of a "live and let live" approach. Maybe I should care more about the poor choices they make.
Alma 4:3
" . . . and they believed that it was the judgments of God sent upon them because of their wickedness and their abominations . . ."
It is not affirmed in this scripture that God has or has not sent them their afflictions. What I find interesting is that when they do believe God has sent afflictions, they humble themselves and say, "We deserve it. We need to do better." That is in such stark contrast to the prevailing feeling today which is usually to say that God should not do anything mean to us, ever, so if bad things happen, there is no God. The choice is humility or a life alone without your Creator.
