Answers to prayers can be hard to interpret correctly. And that's important to remember! Since answers to prayers are most often communicated to us through feelings, our own feelings can get in the way! For instance, we may get really excited about becoming suddenly wealthy. Since we are thinking about being fantastically wealthy while we pray about whether or not to invest in our neighbor's ponzi scheme, we can easily misinterpret that flush of excitement as a positive answer from the Lord! Similarly, if we are feeling anxious about a commitment we made, when we consider not keeping that commitment, we feel a flood of relief. How do we recognize a still, small voice-feeling from the Lord when our own emotions are so strong?
When Lehi traveled through the wilderness with his family and was led by the liahona, it's important to note that the liahona is not likened to personal revelation. It is likened to the word of God! i.e. scriptures, prophets, general conference.
The Lord knows that we are in fragile, human bodies that can easily be run awash with strong emotions. That is why He gave us scriptures. That is why He gave us prophets. Through the word of God we can check our answers we receive through personal revelation. Do they line up with what the prophets have said? If they don't, we had better immerse ourselves more fully in the words of the prophets on that subject and then ask again.
