Our speaker today told the story of a man who was frustrated because he couldn't move a huge boulder. His father came and said, "I didn't ask you to move the rock, just to push the rock." The point wasn't to move the rock but to improve the man's strength and patience.
This is like many things in life. The point is not to have perfect children but to learn to love imperfect children, to have patience, to learn tolerance and all the things you learn from loving such indepent creatures. The process changes you. And the process is the point.
He also told a story about bringing a group of boys to put up an old army tent. The point wasn't to put up a tent but to teach leadership and team work. This is such a good thing to remember when working with youth. We should start with what we want to teach in terms of character and work backwards to activities that will teach these things.
