Day 63: Sunday School

Matthew 5:1Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
2Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
3But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:
4That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

I think the purpose of this instruction is, once again, to remember to not do things for the praise of men. We must remember to concern ourselves only with God's approval and not concern ourselves with what the people around us will think. It also shows that this commandment, like all others, is for our own peace and happiness. God knows we can not please so many people with so many different opinions, it is fruitless, vain, and frustrating. For our own peace he tell us, "Let it go. Don't worry about them. Keep your eyes on me and you'll be just fine. You'll make it." Just like when Peter took his eyes off the Savior when he tried to walk on water and only then did he start to sink. "Keep you eyes on Me."
