The word "redemption" stood out to me at the temple the other day. It is interesting that it's first use in scripture talks about it in terms of freeing slaves.
Leviticus 25:48"After that he is sold he may be redeemed again; one of his brethren may redeem him:
49Either his uncle, or his uncle’s son, may redeem him, or any that is nigh of kin unto him of his family may redeem him; or if he be able, he may redeem himself."
So, the fact that we need to be redeemed means we are enslaved already -- enslaved to bad habits, bad choices, unhealthy ways of thinking and living, and thus enslaved to the Devil, who is the father of all lies. Christ's atonement redeems us from this slavery. The power of the redemption is the power of God to reclaim us from the slavery we have been in and bring us back to His presence and the birthright that was ours and can be ours once again.
The Old Testament really had a lot of fundamental things in it . . .
