We were talking about how to care for people -- how to be the tool in God's hand that he wants us to be -- the kind of tool that will lift people up when they are down -- the kind of tool that will let people know that they are loved when they are wondering if they are. It's an important expectation that God has of us and has huge repercussions eternally on the people that we may fail. And as we grow in our ability to love other people as God does, it makes us sad to think we didn't help someone who we could have helped.
I understand all this. I really feel it. What I don't understand is HOW?
Sue said in class that sometimes we are looking for big ways to help and overlook how much little things can help -- things like a conversation and a smile. She said we need to look around us and notice people, not just the people we know, but all people everywhere and then we should talk to them, smile with them, share a moment.
I have been the beneficiary of this kind of charity. I have been lifted by the small talk and smiles of a stranger. To me it was charity. They took a moment for a kind word when I was wrapped up small inside myself. It helped me see that all wasn't darkness and danger on the outside. There really could be friends in random places.
A good point, Sue. I'll try to be more open and ready for some small talk!
