Jana's husband, Dale, works as an artist doing inside temple work. Jana said that he prays everyday for chances to help people in need. One day, as he began work, he got stopped by a custodian who wanted to talk. Dale wanted to take the time to listen but at the same time he kept thinking, "I've got so much work to do!" Jana said the thought came to him, "You just listen, I can take care of the other stuff."
This struck me because it is so similar to Elder Holland's talk in conference this past fall. He talked about the way Christ had called Peter to the ministry. He said that God caused all those fish to fill his nets because He was showing Peter that if He needed fish, He could get fish. He needed Peter's help for something else.
I noticed just the other day something similar in my own life. I had an uncommon day where I did everything I needed to do: the kids were cared for, the dishes were done, the laundry had been folded. So, I wondered, why don't I feel like I spent my day well? For the first time I was able to see that those things are not the important things in my life and when I feel fulfilled, it is not because they are done. Weird. It's like taking a wrong turn in a race. You have to stop running, look around, and figure out in which direction you should really be putting your energy.
I only hope I don't stand around too long before I figure it out.
